San Joaquin RTD Receives Two New MCI Commuter Coaches

San Joaquin Regional Transit District (RTD) will introduce two new MCI commuter coaches into service in August 2021.

The breakthrough design of the new coaches boasts of an innovative low-entry vestibule with a ramp for rapid entry and exit for all passengers.  This makes accessibility and exit via two doors easier.  The easy to operate and efficient ramp is user friendly and provides greater independence to passengers using mobility devices.

“The new commuter coaches provide additional customer amenities such as leather airline style seating and limousine-style comfort,” said Maintenance Superintendent Brad Menil.  “WiFi connectivity and USB charging ports allow for productivity.  All of these amenities make the long commutes more relaxing and enjoyable—so passengers can enjoy the ride.”

In line with its core value for safety, the new coaches feature high tech safety systems which includes sensors to monitor wheel temperature for potential issues, 360° camera that provides a birds-eye view around the entire coach, and collision mitigation technology that includes stationary object detection and lane departure warnings.  All of these features will create a safer and more responsible environment for its employees, customers, and community.

The new commuter coaches replace two 2001 MCI coaches.  The purchase was made possible by the following grants:  5339, Measure K, State of Good Repair Bus Replacement, and State Transit Assistance Capital funds.
