STOCKTON, Calif. – The City of Stockton will host the Summer Youth Employment Kick-Off Event on Thursday, June 1, 2023, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Stockton Memorial Civic Auditorium, 525 N. Center St., across the street from City Hall.

The City of Stockton received a $4.35 million grant through the State of California #CaliforniansForAll Youth Job Corps to create a robust youth employment and development program.

“The #CaliforniansForAll Youth Jobs Corps is a win for our young people, the City of Stockton and the State of California,” said California Chief Service Officer Josh Fryday. “We are excited to partner with the City of Stockton and local organizations to create meaningful job opportunities for our vulnerable youth populations.”

Over 100 student workers, ages 16 -19, will gain work experience and build job skills in positions with the City of Stockton, and an additional 200 students and young adults are working with four local non-profit organizations, expanding, and enhancing existing youth workforce programs at the Greater Valley Conservation Corps, Parents by Choice, Rising Sun, and San Joaquin A+

"The youth are our future and greatest investment," said Stockton Mayor Kevin Lincoln. "Our Summer Youth Employment Programs are addressing the fundamental workforce development needs of Stockton students while advancing economic development goals for our City. Youth programming and development is a top priority for our City Council, and providing our youth with critical job skills, career pathways, and a paycheck, is an incredible step in the right direction for the future of our city."

This event will bring all those who are part of the Summer Youth Employment Program together to celebrate. The afternoon will include orientation for the City of Stockton Student Worker Program participants, providing an overview of City departments, operations, and their specific assignments during the summer.

“We received over 600 applications for 106 City of Stockton positions,” shared City Manager Harry Black. “This demonstrates the demand, need and interest in gaining job skills and experience. All of the students who are part of the City program will work directly with City departments and have the benefit of a Student Work Program supervisor who will work with the students in their job assignments to develop and grow their job skills and potential.”

The Stockton Student Worker Program Kick-off Event is free to program participants and their supporters. Registration is required. Student Worker Program participants, their parents, and representatives from organizations participating in the program may register online. A continental breakfast will be served from 9:30 – 10 a.m. Members of the media are encouraged to attend. For questions, please email Dale.Applewhite@stocktonca.gov, or call (209) 937-8452.
