CVB visits first international tradeshow

JULY 2008 - The Stockton Conference & Visitors Bureau participated in the international group travel tradeshow in June for the first time. The Travel Industry Association has hosted the show annually since 1968.

TIA’s International Pow Wow is the travel industry’s premier international marketplace and is the largest generator of Visit USA travel. It is NOT a typical trade show. In just three days of intensive pre-scheduled, computer-generated business appointments, more than 1,000 U. S. travel organizations from every region of the USA, and representing all industry category components, and close to 1,500 International and Domestic Buyers from more than 70 countries, conduct business negotiations that result in the generation of over $3.5 billion in future Visit USA travel. At International Pow Wow, buyers and sellers are able to conduct business that would otherwise be generated only through an exhaustive number of around-the-world trips.

Delegates for the Stockton CVB met with international buyers and receptive operators from over a dozen countries currently doing business in California. The Stockton CVB also participated in the international media marketplace providing media kits to international journalists.

“This was a great jumpstart for the CVB” noted Wes Rhea, Director of the Stockton CVB, “the international group travel market can take up to three years to penetrate and this type of event assists in accelerating that process. We have seen a strong growth in the group bus market in Stockton over the last year, and this show is part of the process to expand that market.”

By participating in this year’s Pow Wow event, Stockton also receives the sales leads from the California Travel & Tourism Commission, who also participated in the three-day event and conducted over 225 appointments. California was represented by more than 70 attractions, destinations and hotels.
