The Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce has announced the selection of Judge Consuelo “Connie” Callahan, U.S. Court of Appeals Ninth Circuit, as its 2009 ATHENA Award recipient.

Connie began her law career in Stockton as a deputy city attorney and joined the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office in 1976, specializing in prosecution of child abuse and sexual assault cases. In 1986, she was appointed commissioner of the Stockton Municipal Court and in 1992 she became the first female and first Hispanic to serve as a San Joaquin County Superior Court judge. Governor Pete Wilson appointed her to serve on California’s Third District Court of Appeal in Sacramento in 1996, which made her the first San Joaquin County resident to serve in that capacity in 73 years. Finally, Judge Callahan joined the U.S. Court of Appeals Ninth Circuit in 2003 following the unanimous confirmation of her to the position by the U.S. Senate.

Judge Callahan is a graduate of the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. In addition to her J.D. degree, Judge Callahan holds a Bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and a Master’s in law (LL.M.) from University of Virginia. Her numerous awards and honors include the Governor’s Award for Criminal Justice Programs, the Susan B. Anthony Award for Women of Achievement and the Stockton Peacemaker of the Year Award. In 1999 she was inducted into the San Joaquin County Mexican-American Hall of Fame.

Judge Callahan remains a proud Stocktonian and an advocate of one of the City’s proudest institutions, the University of the Pacific. She has mentored countless law students, both informally and as part of various internship and clerkship programs. She is a role model of leadership and service and a respected leader of the legal luminary community. Judge Callahan is a woman who excels as a community-minded leader and a person of great personal and professional accomplishment.
