It is with great pleasure that the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce announces the selection of Mimi Nguyen as its 2009 ATHENA Young Professional Leadership Award recipient. She is currently the Economic Development Director and the Human Resource Director for the Downtown Stockton Alliance which represents 1,000 business and property owners of downtown Stockton.

Since 2005, Mimi has been a volunteer coach for Stockton Gymnastics to underprivileged children throughout the community at Stribley Community Center and the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds. She also teaches self defense to women and girls at the Stockton Ballet School. Through gymnastics, she was able to instill useful life skills into the curriculum for the students including respect, perseverance, integrity and teamwork.

One of the biggest reasons that Mimi is a role model for young women personally and professionally is that she was able to overcome her childhood obstacles and being able to use her experience and adult successes to inspire today’s youth. In the last few years, Mimi has been the keynote motivational speaker at the Asian Pacific Islander Youth Summit, Youth in Government Day and at the Japanese American Youth Scholarship Luncheon.

The ATHENA Young Professional Award is an international leadership award that actively supports and celebrates the ATHENA mission of supporting, developing and honoring women leaders, inspiring women to achieve their full potential - creating balance in leadership worldwide. It is the focus on mentorship of women that sets the ATHENA Young Professional Award apart from others of its kind.

THE CRITERIA
ATHENA Young Professional Nominees are emerging women leaders who meet each of the following criteria:
- Demonstrates excellence, creativity and initiative in her business or profession
- Provides valuable service to improve the quality of life for others in her community
- Clearly serves as a role model for young women both personally and professionally
